Pre Plan Your Chicken Coop DIY Project, Includes Precautions to Avoid Disappointment

You can construct a chicken house in just one afternoon, it only takes some timber and a few nails to build a chicken coop. But there are some precautions you should be aware of before you jump into DIY.

Many people jump straight away to the building process without taking these precautions that I will share with you in this article. And as a result their chicken house is not that extraordinary.

You should plan everything before you jump into any project, planning is the essential part. It is always advisable to take most of your time planning a project.

I know we all want to finish any project as soon as possible, but if we start any project without any pre planning we end up with a very rocky little result.

So to avoid disappointment, I will share some of the planning considerations to keep in mind before starting a chicken coop project.

1) The size of the coop, this is very important that you decide the size of your chicken house depending on the number of chickens that will live there.  It is suggested that an average chicken occupies 4 square feet, so multiply this number by the number of your birds.

Note: Keep in mind that the population of your chickens will grow over time, so I really recommend giving some extra space for future chickens.

2) Breathing Wholes, this is very important that you build some windows on the house. This will provide breathing space for the chickens. Just like humans birds also require oxygen and if they do not receive the proper amount of oxygen then they can turn into cannibal killers.

3) Security, build a wire fence around the building this will protect your chickens from possible predators.

4) Maintenance, it is recommended that you place your chicken coop on an inclined surface, this will help you a lot on the long run, because of the indent you will be able to clean and maintain the building with very little effort. The rubbish cause by the birds will easily fall out naturally.
